Richins Family
We came from the Cotswold region of England. In the 1860s we jumped the pond to America and landed in Utah. From there we worked our way south to Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico.
Albert Francis Richins
Albert Francis Richins was the son of Joseph Richins and Jane Morse Richins. He was born at Sheepscombe, Gloucestershire, England, on May 3, 1855. He married Mary Jane Jones in 1874 and lived in Henefer, Utah. They move to the Grouse Creek Valley (Utah) in 1877 where he lived out his life. He passed away in 1932.

Called to Serve
Orson Oriel Richins was called to serve a Church mission in 1896. He left two families in northern Mexico to serve for 27 months in the Northern States Mission. The families managed a dairy ranch and a store to provide for their needs. They were blessed for their faith and prospered in their father’s absence.

Charles Richins
Charles Richins and his young family moved from England to Utah in 1853 as part of the pioneer migration of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They lived in Salt Lake City seven years before helping to settle Henefer, Utah. Charles was Bishop of the Henefer Ward from 1861-1890, after which time he moved to Mexico, where he died in 1903 at the age of 75.
Ena Agnes Richins
Ena Agnes Richins was born in Colonia Diaz, Chihuahua, Mexico on January 3, 1906 and died December 1, 1992 in Las Cruces, Dona Ana, New Mexico. She was buried on December 5, 1992 in Lordsburg, Hidalgo, New Mexico. Her early childhood days were spent on the farm in Colonia Diaz, Mexico. The last part of her life was spent serving the people of Hidalgo County, NM in various capacities.
Ether Wellington Richins
Ether Wellington Richins was born to Orson Oriel & Rachel Richins in Colonia Diaz, Chihuahua, Mexico on October 14, 1902. His family fled Mexico in 1912 during the Mexican Revolution. They homesteaded in the Hatchet Valley south of Hachita, New Mexico about three miles west of the Mexican border. Ether died in El Paso, Texas January 21, 1973.
Guardian Angel Santa
Christmas Eve, 1921. The children were in bed trying to sleep so Santa would come. Mom wondered how she would manage to deliver Christmas for the children. Finances were tight and there just wasn’t much to offer as gifts. Then a knock on the door by one of Santa’s helpers on a white horse saved the occasion – presents and candy for each child!
Heber George Richins
Heber Richins was born April 6, 1917 in Cosmopolis, Washington. He lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, Shasta, Nevada and Sacramento, California before joining the U.S. Navy. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Heber attended the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (CA). There he married Phylis Swinney. Later they performed missionary service in Nigeria for four years.
Henry Richins & Sarah Haynes
Henry Richins was born in 1769 in Gloucestershire, England. Sarah Haynes was born in 1770 in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England. They lived in the village of Sheepscombe near Painswick after their marriage in 1792. In 1843, Henry developed gangrene in his leg and died April 23, 1843 at the age of 74 years. Sarah died on April 1, 1849.
John Richins & Ann King
John Richins was born in 1697 or 1698. His wife Ann was born in 1695 or 1696. The were married at Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. After the birth of their daughter Sarah, John moved his family from Hawkesbury to Horton, where he bought a small estate, which he held under the Lord of the Manor. Ann died in October 1774. John died at Horton, Gloucestershire, England in October 1777 at the age of 80.

John Willmott Richins
John Willmott Richins was born September 13, 1895, at Colonia Diaz, Chihuahua, Mexico to Orson Oriel and Agnes Richins. In 1912, John fled Mexico to the United States during the Mexican Revolution and stayed in Hachita, New Mexico and Jenefer, Utah. In 1913, John and his mother moved to Richfield, Utah and then to Oakley and Burley, Idaho. John eventually moved to Provo, Utah where he lived out his life.
Joseph William Bond, Sr.
On November 25, 1852 at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, Joseph William Bond joined the family of William and Mary Ann Barker Bond. Soon thereafter, Bond family moved wets with other Mormons to settle the valley of the Great Salt Lake. In 1864 they moved on northeastward to a small village called Heneferville, where Joseph grew up. Later he married and moved to settle Mesa, Arizona. He passed away in 1943 at the age of 90 years.

Murder at Corner Ranch
On February 12, 1917, just seven miles north of the Corner Ranch in the southwest part of New Mexico, Andy Peterson, Burton Jensen, and Hugh Acord were kidnapped and murdered while gathering cattle near the Corner Ranch south of Hachita in the boot hill of NM.
Orson Oriel Richins
Orson Oriel Richins grew up in Henefer, Utah. He married Rachel Hennefer in Salt Lake City on May 25, 1881. Orson moved from Henefer, Utah to Mesa, Arizona and then Colonia Diaz, Mexico. After the Mexican Revolution Orson homesteaded south of Hachita, New Mexico near the Mexican border. He passed away on December 16, 1926, and was buried at Virden, New Mexico.
Phylis Evelyn Swinney
Phylis Swinney was born July 27, 1920 on a farm near Buffalo, Kansas. She attended the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (CA), where she met Heber Richins. They married in 1943. In 1945 Phylis and Heber moved to Nigeria for four years of missionary service.
Prudence Priscilla Richins
Prudence Priscilla Richins was born on January 8, 1860 in Salt Lake City, Utah. A year later her family moved moved to Heneferville, Summit County, Utah. Her father, Charles Richins, had been called by President Brigham Young to help settle this village. He was later ordained bishop of the Hennefer Ward. Prudence grew up in Hennefer and married Joseph William Bond. Much of their married life was spent building up Mesa, Arizona, where she passed away in 1932 at the age of 72 years.
Richard Richins & Charlotte Priscilla Wager
Richard Richins was christened March 26, 1800 in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England. Richard lived with family on a large estate called Ebworth, where his father was a farm laborer. Richard married (Charlotte) Priscilla Wager on October 28, 1817. Priscilla was born in 1799, and was about 18 years old when they married. Richard worked as a laborer on the Ebworth Estate. They married young, and died young. Priscilla was only 42, when she died of complications of childbirth in 1842. Richard died of intemperance in 1848.
Sarah Amanda Shurtliff
Sarah Amanda Shurtliff (“Sade”) was born January 22, 1865 in Harrisville, Utah. Her father, Luman Andrel Shurtliff, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after hearing Joseph Smith speak. After her first husband, Silas Harper was killed in an accident, Sarah married Orson Oriel Richins and had six more children while living in Mexico. There, she managed a store and a restaurant and made cheeses to sell. She passed away in Virden, New Mexico on October 25, 1947.
They Crossed the Plains with a Handcart
In March of 1856, Elder Edmund Ellsworth was instructed to lead 529 LDS church members aboard the sailing ship Enoch Train to Utah. They set sail at Liverpool, England bound for Boston, USA. This was the first group that traveled with the aid of the Perpetual Immigration Fund and crossed the plains with handcarts. Thomas & Sarah Richins
The life of Thomas Richins is pieced together from various church and legal records. Thomas was christened at Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire, England on November 22, 1727. He married and had two sons and lived in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England. His wife Sarah died in 1790 and was buried in Painswick. Thomas was buried at Painswick on May 23, 1801.
Thomas Richins & Harriet Deveraux
Compiled by Laural Bushman, 2002. A history of Thomas Richins was born 6 June 1826 at Sheepscombe, Gloucestershire, England to Richard Richins and Charlotte Priscilla Wager. And Harriett Deveraux, daughter of John Deveraux and Esther Cockshed. In 1856 Thomas and Esther traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to join the main body of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They lived in Salt Lake for four or five years before they were called south to help settle what is now Goshen, Utah County, Utah. Harriet died in 1896, age 63 years and Thomas passed away in 1896, after suffering a stroke on Christmas day. Both are buried in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.

Thomas and Esther traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah from England in 1856. They lived in Salt Lake for four or five years before helping settle what is now Goshen, Utah County, Utah. Harriet died in 1896; Thomas died in 1896. They are buried in the Pleasant Grove (Utah) City Cemetery.
William Richins & Charlotte Ann Guy
William was the sixth child born to Henry Richins and Sarah Haynes on December 27, 1806 at Ebworth Park in Sheepscombe, Gloucestershire, England. Charlotte AnnGuy was born November 30, 1806. They were married at the Painswick Church on January 29, 1826. All of William’s and Charlotte’s family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and emigrated to Utah in 1866. William died on December 8, 1873 in Provo, Utah. Charlotte lived in Henefer, Utah until her death in 1878.
